After a hot start to free agency, the Dallas Mavericks are now sifting through the remaining options left for possible depth ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Considering how much the team relies on its guard play, and the fact Kyrie Irving has struggled with availability since arriving in Dallas, a backcourt addition for the veteran minimum would make a ton of sense going into training camp.

And as it turns out, the Mavericks are considering just that, according to new intel.

Late Saturday, Dalton Trigg of DallasBasketaball.com reported the Mavs have worked out veteran guard Malachi Flynn. It's unclear when this visit took place, but it shows interest from Dallas' side in nabbing some backcourt help.

This isn't the first time the Mavericks have been linked to Flynn, either. HoopsHype's Michael Scotto noted that Dallas was interested in the former first-round pick early on in free agency, and it seems things have progressed on that front since a workout has now taken place.

Flynn would provide an experienced hand who could help Dallas' second unit whenever Doncic and/or Irving isn't on the floor. The San Diego State product's suited up in 214 games since 2020 and owns career averages of 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest.

At 26, Flynn likely still has some potential waiting to be unearthed. He's been a mediocre shooter in the league to this point (posting 33.4% from deep, 74.5% from the line and 49.9% true shooting over his career), but would have a legendary player as his coach in Jason Kidd, plus all-time talents like Doncic, Irving and Klay Thompson to learn from.

Flynn showcased some of his spark-plug capabilities in 24 games with the Detroit Pistons last year as well, posting 8.0 PPG during his stint in the Motor City.

With several forwards and big men in the mix, targeting a guard to round out the bench would be a wise move for the reigning Western Conference champions. It remains to be seen if the smoke around Flynn and the team turns into anything, though.
