The Dallas Mavericks have been very active since the start of NBA free agency as this championship finalist looks to reload for another run. Adding both Nnaji Marshall and Klay Thompson has given Dallas a major boost on the wing, but it still has another open roster spot to play with yet.

And it turns out, one player from this past season might be filling that hole.

On Twitter/X, forward Markieff Morris advocated for the Mavericks to sign his brother, Marcus, when discussing possible free-agent additions. Another user then said Dallas should instead re-sign Markieff, to which he replied, "I'm coming back. I want bro to come with me."

The fact Markieff was so definitive about his Dallas return indicates it's likely real. However, without a signing being reported yet, something has to be holding things up. Perhaps the staus of his brother joining him is the other shoe that needs to drop here.

Markieff is coming off of a 2023-24 campaign that featured several career lows for him, including points (2.5) and minutes (8.3) per game. The veteran also suited up in just one of the Mavs' 22 playoff games, with his lone appearance coming in the Finals Game 4 blowout over Boston.

It's a bit confusing why the Mavericks would waste a roster spot on Markieff as he nears retirement, but it's possible re-signing him is a bid to add Marcus. The latter is still a legit rotation player, as he's fresh off of making 49 appearances between Cleveland and Philadelphia this past season. He played in nine of the Cavs' 12 playoff contests this year, including dropping 25 points against the Celtics in Game 5 of the conference semifinals.

Getting both Marcus brothers on the roster will require some maneuvering, but GM Nico Harrison is more than capable of clearing the space necessary.
