The 60-year-old head coach cannot escape the Bill Belichick rumors, as the former Patriots head coach would be interested in leading the Cowboys.

After getting embarrassed in the NFL playoffs last season by the Green Bay Packers at home, there was a belief that the Dallas Cowboys could move on from head coach Mike McCarthy.

However, that never happened as the Cowboys brought back McCarthy for the 2024 season, giving him one more shot to get this team deep into the playoffs.

If McCarthy cannot get the job done this coming season or starts the 2024 campaign slow, it will add fuel to the fire and give way to the idea of the team potentially hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Belichick parted ways with New England at the end of the 2023 season and shockingly didn’t land any head coaching opportunities this offseason. The Super Bowl-winning head coach will hope to get opportunities next offseason and specifically has his eyes set on a few teams in the NFC East.

ESPN reported on Wednesday that the former Patriots head coach “is believed to be biding his time until next January for openings on teams he has told confidants he would be interested in coaching.” One of those teams is the Cowboys, which doesn’t come as a surprise as some fans thought the team would go in that direction after the 2023 season.

However, the ESPN story added one more piece of significant info to the Cowboys’ interest that could make McCarthy slightly uncomfortable.

“A source who spoke with a longtime friend of Belichick said the friend wonders if the coach will have another opportunity: I don’t think Bill Belichick will ever be a head coach again in the National Football League, the friend said. Unless it’s [for] Jerry Jones.”

If things were to go south with McCarthy, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Jones have Belichick on his short list as he’s a proven winner despite the last few years in New England.

Could the pair work together? Maybe. Would Belichick get Dallas over the top? It’s possible, as he would have a better roster with the Cowboys. However, these are all hypothetical questions as McCarthy is still the head coach in Dallas. But those rumors of Belichick will get louder and louder if Dallas doesn’t win the NFC East and make a deep run in the playoffs.
