Perfect Mike McCarthy Replacement Made Clear After Cowboys' Disastrous Week 2 Loss

It seems like it's only a matter of time before Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is fired. Week 2's disgusting loss to the Saints was the second collapse in three meaningful games for his group, and Dallas fans were quick to point out the stark coaching difference on the two sidelines on Sunday.

New Orleans offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is quickly becoming a popular head coaching candidate. Derek Carr led the Saints to scores on every drive in Week 1 then continued that streak into the 4th quarter against the Cowboys, giving Jerry Jones a perfect look at someone who could replace McCarthy once he's let go.

Just like in 2023, Dallas was overmatched against superior schemes. Kubiak is a rising, bright football mind and could be one of Jones' first calls this offseason.

Klint Kubiak Makes Strong Case to Replace Mike McCarthy

McCarthy isn't the only person who deserves blame for Sunday's mess, yet he's certainly on the short list of the Cowboys' biggest problems. Dallas can beat poor teams but are consistently overmatched against smart coaching staffs.

Matt LaFleur and his crew took McCarthy to the woodshed in the playoffs. Now, Kubiak has done the same thing with an inferior roster. Considering that Jones refused to give McCarthy a contract extension entering the year, it seems obvious he intends to move on following the season.

Aside from the clear strategic mistake of employing a lame-duck coach, it's time for Jones to consider alternatives. McCarthy will remain the coach for the rest of the 2024-25 season, though someone else will almost certainly be manning the ship following the year.

Kubiak could be that captain. Bobby Slowik of the Texans and Ben Johnson of the Lions are popular options as well. No matter who Jones prefers, McCarthy can't be trusted moving forward if Dallas is serious about competing for a Super Bowl.
