Texas Rangers fans have already seen their fair share of pitching injuries this year, from Jacob deGrom early on to Nate Eovaldi more recently.

So naturally, they feared the worst when Max Scherzer exited Tuesday's game early against the Toronto Blue Jays with an apparent injury. Was he about to join deGrom on the dreaded "done for the season" list?

Fortunately, Scherzer's injury appears relatively minor and doesn't seem to be too serious.

Max Scherzer Injury Update

The Rangers quickly diagnosed Scherzer's injury as a right triceps spasm, which isn't anything to worry about. He likely won't miss any time and should be able to make his next scheduled start against the Guardians in Cleveland this weekend, assuming he doesn't need any extra rest to recover.

Scherzer was dealing on Tuesday before suddenly departing with one out in the bottom of the sixth, yielding just 3 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings (lowering his ERA to 3.77 in the process). He was only at 73 pitches at that point (49 strikes) before he felt something funny in his right arm and alerted the medical staff. You rarely see Scherzer walk off the mound in the middle of an inning, so something was clearly up.

Losing Scherzer at this stage of the season would have been devastating to our playoff chances, as we entered play on Tuesday just 2 games behind the Houston Astros for the AL West lead and only half a game in front of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card spot. Even if we did still manage to make the postseason, we probably wouldn't have gone very far in October without him.

Thankfully, Scherzer should be able to avoid the IL and remain in the rotation going forward. That's great news, because we're gonna need him.
