3 Trade Targets the Rangers Must Pursue at the Deadline
By Tyler Maher
2. Rich Hill, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates
If the Rangers simply want to add rotation depth, trading for Rich Hill would make a lot of sense. Similar to Montgomery, he's on a cheap one-year deal right now ($8 million) and wouldn't cost much to acquire given his age (43).
With the Pirates stumbling towards another losing season, they have no use for Hill the rest of the way. He's almost certain to be traded -- the only question is where?
Hill's numbers -- 7-10, 4.82 ERA, 1.47 ERA -- aren't great, but they're serviceable for a fourth or fifth starter. Texas could even stick him in the bullpen to keep him fresh and then plug him into the rotation if an injury pops up.
Hill also has a wealth of postseason experience from his time with the Dodgers, logging a 3.06 ERA in 53 October innings. He's someone you can count on to perform under the bright lights.
