The clock is ticking for the Dallas Cowboys to make a significant trade ahead of Tuesday's deadline. While Jerry Jones says he's confident in his current roster, contenders should always be aggressive pursuing possible deals to improve for a playoff run.

In fact, it turns out Dallas is sniffing around the cornerback market, according to one last-minute rumor.

NFL insider Benjamin Allbright reports the Cowboys are among the teams showing interest in Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson. Dallas is in the race along with the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills, showing that top-flight teams are targeting the former second-round pick before the deadline.

Johnson is in the midst of a career year just seven games into this season. He's recorded a personal-best two interceptions to begin the 2023 campaign, including an electric pick-six he returned 39 yards for a score in Week 7.

Johnson's shown obvious playmaking instincts since entering the league, racking up 31 passes defended over his first three seasons. With him possibly taking the leap as a turnover-creator, that clearly raises his ceiling.

It also raises his price, especially with the rising talent set to hit free agency in 2024. That could cause the Bears to pursue a trade now and get some draft capital in return for him before he possibly bolts for nothing next offseason.

It'd still cost the Cowboys quite a bit to add the stud corner with so many Super Bowl hopefuls in the mix. That being said, Dallas' defense has been the clear backbone of the team's 5-2 start, so investing as much as possible into that side of the ball would make this team's best asset even stronger ahead of the playoffs.

Pairing Stephon Gilmore with Johnson would then allow DaRon Bland, who's stepped up in a major way following Trevon Diggs' injury, to slide back into his normal slot role. That'd give Dan Quinn a trio of playmakers in his secondary who can alter games with one big play, making this secondary a true nightmare to match up against.
