Sam Williams' Injury Gets Even Worse for Cowboys After Latest News
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a significant blow to their defensive line at Sunday’s training camp practice in Oxnard, California. Young pass rusher Sam Williams reportedly tore his ACL after being carted off the field in a ton of pain.
The Cowboys were looking for a big season from Williams in 2024, especially since they lost Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong in free agency. However, that will be delayed as the 25-year-old defensive end will be out for the 2024 campaign.
On Sunday night, we received more devastating details about Williams’ injury, which could prolong his rehab as he looks ahead to the 2025 season. Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reported that Williams also tore his MCL and ACL.
If you are the Cowboys front office brass, this is not the news you wanted to hear as you didn’t come into the season with a ton of EDGE depth to start. Last season, Williams posted 26 total tackles, seven quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks as a rotational defensive lineman.
With Williams out for the season, Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer must lean on rookie Marshawn Kneeland and Viliami Fehoko Jr. The latter was viewed as a potential cut candidate heading into training camp.
That now changes for Fehoko as the Cowboys will need production from him and Kneeland, one of the best pass rushers in the MAC last season. At the same time, we should expect the Cowboys to explore the free-agent market as this is a pivotal season for many people in the organization.
