Trey Lance Comments Ahead of Pivotal Cowboys QB Battle at Camp
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys enter training camp with a couple of questions about the quarterback position, which isn’t good for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
The first question is on the contract status of starting quarterback Dak Prescott, who is looking for an extension and has yet to receive one from the team. Prescott is entering the final year of a four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021.
Therefore, whatever the Cowboys decide to do with Prescott, will have cascading effects on the roster and QB position. The other question is if Trey Lance is ready to take that next step in his development.
The Cowboys took a chance on Lance, trading a 2024 fourth-round pick to San Francisco last summer. The former North Dakota State quarterback didn’t play at all last season for Dallas, but he has a huge opportunity in front of him this offseason to take the QB2 job from Cooper Rush.
The Cowboys’ coaches have been talking up Lance this offseason and the young quarterback is ready for the competition this summer.
“I feel like I'm in a good spot,” Lance said to ESPN’s Todd Archer, “so I'm excited to get out there, get some reps and let it rip.”
Lance hasn’t had much NFL experience as he played in eight games with the San Francisco 49ers before an injury sidelined him in Week 2 of the 2022 season and opened the door for Brock Purdy to become the starter later in the year.
The former North Dakota State quarterback has completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in his NFL career. He also has some rushing ability, recording 235 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Cowboys hope Lance has learned a lot by sitting behind Prescott and Rush for a year and can tap into that potential that made him a first-round pick. The dual-threat quarterback has a good chance to either become the future starting quarterback of the Cowboys or another team in the NFL.
