Potential Cowboys RB Trade Target Now Off the Table After Latest News
By Jovan Alford
With next month’s trade deadline on the horizon, two of the biggest needs for the Dallas Cowboys are on the defensive line and at running back.
The defensive line has been hit hard by injuries over the last couple of weeks, but the Cowboys hope star pass rusher Micah Parsons will return soon. However, when it comes to the RB spot, the players just haven’t performed this season.
The Cowboys are dead last in rushing (77.2 yards per game) and yards per carry (3.5). Dallas had a chance to upgrade the position this offseason, but they refused to go after the big names and instead settled on Ezekiel Elliott for a one-year deal.
Elliott has been a huge disappointment and surpassed by Rico Dowdle, who has done his best as the team’s starting running back. That said, Cowboys fans have their eyes on various RBs like New Orleans Saints star Alvin Kamara.
Kamara is on a two-win Saints team and would be a perfect addition to the Cowboys’ offense due to his rushing and pass-catching abilities. However, Kamara made a huge decision about his future in New Orleans, which will disappoint Cowboys fans.
NFL News: Alvin Kamara Signs Two-Year Extension With Saints
According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Saints and Kamara agreed to a two-year, $24.5 million extension, putting him under contract through 2026.
The two-year contract extension puts Kamara in a position to retire a Saint, which was his goal. This season, the star running back has posted 690 scrimmage yards and scored seven total touchdowns on 145 touches.
Cowboys fans would’ve loved the idea of adding Kamara to the backfield, but it's best if they set their sights on lower-tiered running backs. If the Cowboys have plans to compete, their best RB trade options might be Khalil Herbert (Bears), Miles Sanders (Panthers), or D’Onta Foreman (Browns).
None of those names are impressive and don’t have the same impact as Kamara, but they would be an upgrade over what the Cowboys have now.
