The Dallas Cowboys released their unofficial depth chart last week and fans took the opportunity to dissect every aspect of the new information. Coaches are normally tight-lipped this time of year, and if there’s any chance to read the tea leaves, fans are going to do it.

While the first unofficial depth chart can be treated like gospel, it could also be a fluid situation. One player that was listed as a starter on last week’s release had to be feeling good about his chances of making the team. But a rough performance against the Los Angeles Rams could be the beginning of the end and lead to a surprising cut when the 53-man roster is finalized.

Cowboys DB Kemon Hall’s Time as a Starter Will Be Short-Lived

Kemon Hall was listed as a starter at nickel on the Cowboys’ first unofficial depth chart and for good reason. With injuries to top corner Trevon Diggs and third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr., there was plenty of opportunity for Hall to step in and secure his starting role on Saturday night. Instead, Hall ran into Sean McVay, who picked on the rookie in his 25 snaps.

Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett targeted Hall four times and completed all four passes for 37 yards. While Hall’s day could have been worse if he had given up a score, Jerry Trotta of The Landry Hat noted that the 28-year-old “looked a step slow” and that may open the door for another player to make the roster.

The Cowboys are desperate for corners as Diggs and Revel work their way back to the field. The Athletic’s Jon Machota also labeled it as one of Dallas’s biggest concerns heading into the season, and even predicted the Cowboys could add a cornerback by the time the regular season begins.

“Not having Trevon Diggs and Shavon Revel has made cornerback a major question mark. No one has really emerged at the position beyond DaRon Bland and Kaiir Elam. And that’s why we are still predicting a veteran addition.”

A name like Kendall Fuller could make sense for the Cowboys as a player who can play on the outside or in the slot. But no matter who it is, Machota doesn’t have Hall on his latest roster projection – even after he was listed as a starter this time last week.
