Through four weeks, the Dallas Cowboys rank first in both total yards (413.0) and passing yards per game (281.2). They're also averaging the fifth-most points in the league at 28.0. The only problem is that they're giving up 33.0 points per game, explaining their 1-2-1 record.
Matt Eberflus' defense has been pretty vulnerable over the opening month of the season, especially against the pass. The Cowboys are giving up 432.5 total yards per game, including 297.2 passing yards, both league-worsts. That's why Dallas might want to go after some help for its struggling secondary. With that in mind, they could set their sights on Cleveland Browns CB Greg Newsome II.
The Cowboys Should Pursue a Trade For Browns CB Greg Newsome II
The Cleveland Browns are 1-3, and with rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel set to take the reins of the offense, it might be a long season for Kevin Stefanski's team. That might leave Cleveland with no choice but to part ways with some of its veterans, even if that means breaking up its stellar defense.
In this scenario, the Cowboys would give up a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick in return for Newsome and a 2026 fifth-round pick (Via Raiders). That way, the Browns would stockpile more assets to keep building their young roster.
Newsome, who's in the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, has been tangled up in trade rumors dating back to last season. Chances are that the Browns would've moved on from him already if it weren't for Martin Emerson Jr.'s season-ending injury. He's coming off the worst season of his career, and his $13.3 million salary is a little too steep.
So, why would the Cowboys want him then? For starters, they have more than enough cap space to accommodate his salary. But more importantly than that, Newsome has actually been pretty solid this season, stepping up in a contract year and containing stars like Tee Higgins.
Also, Newsome is one of the few cornerbacks in the league who can legitimately be as good inside as he is outside. He's nearly split time at the nickel and out wide, and he'd give Matt Eberflus a versatile defensive back to deploy almost all over the field.
Trevon Diggs has struggled for most of the season, and DaRon Bland is coming off an injury. Newsome could still have a place next to them if they step up, but he could also replace Diggs if the former All-Pro fails to get his act together again.
Newsome is a former first-round pick who's just 25 years old, and he wouldn't be the first player who failed to live up to the expectations early only to break out as soon as he leaves Cleveland.
