Rangers Make Big Move to Strengthen Bullpen Amid Offseason Signing Spree
By Jack Gurley
Earlier this week, it was announced that the Texas Rangers have made another big move this offseason by signing veteran relief pitcher and Texas native Hoby Milner. The Rangers signed the southpaw to a one-year $2.5 million contract and and hope he can help stabilize the team's dismantled bullpen, which currently has more questions than answers going into 2025.
Milner is coming off a somewhat disappointing 2024 campaign with the Milwaukee Brewers, during which he finished with a rather high 4.73 ERA through 61 games. Hopefully, Milner's arrival in Arlington will rejuvenate his career, which has been somewhat up and down to this point.
While Milner has remained an inconsistent pitcher for the majority of his career, which began in 2017, he has shown flashes of being an all-star Calabar pitcher through the past few seasons. He is only a season removed from his stellar 2023 campaign, during which he ended the year with a remarkable 1.82 ERA through 73 appearances for the Brewers.
Hopefully, Milner can revert into the solid pitcher he has proven himself to be capable of at various points throughout his career. The Rangers desperately need solid arms, and Milner could potentially help fill the large void left when several Rangers relief pitchers, including Kirby Yates and Jose Leclerc, became free agents at the end of this past season.
Overall, Ranger fans should be relieved that the front office continues to address the team's underwhelming bullpen going into next season. It will be interesting to see what, if any, more moves the Rangers make to strengthen the bullpen, which is by far the team's weakest unit.
