The Texas Rangers are currently behind the Houston Astros by two games, and they've been making a late push to become the only AL West team to make the playoffs. Now, it looks like the Rangers' mediocrity is continuing, and they're getting worse before it gets better.
The Rangers didn't have a loud trade deadline and picked up the slack in catching and relief pitching. The Red Sox, White Sox and Rays did plenty of work, but the Rangers, who were expected to make some noise, didn't do much.
The Rangers didn't buy or sell, and their result two weeks later is only getting worse and more mediocre, and it's not going to do them any favors in 2027.
The Texas Rangers are on set for the middle of the pack draft order in the 2027 MLB Draft
Per Tankathon, the Rangers are 14th in the 2027 MLB Draft. Of course, we still have baseball to play this season, so that can change, but if the Rangers don't focus on selling this season, they will only be left with a mid-tier pick.
It's not the end of the world here, as plenty of players in the middle of the first round have been great, but they had a chance to sell high at the deadline, and they didn't. Should they have sold Joc Pederson? Evan Carter? Maybe not a whole lot for Carter, but they definitely could've gotten something for Pederson.
Maybe even Brandon Nimmo, but the Rangers could've gotten something valuable to build for the future. But they didn't. They decided to make a late playoff push this season, but things are falling apart as we speak.
They bought, but it wasn't anything too special. Adam Macko, Chase Silseth and Logan O'Hoppe are fine additions, but that's not going to make the difference in winning the AL West this season.
It's also not the Rangers' fault that they haven't done too much. The bats have been non-existent, and they have missed their starting pitchers this season. Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and Jack Leiter. Jordan Montgomery has recently returned from Tommy John surgery.
It also hasn't helped that Corey Seager went through arguably the worst slump in his career. We're talking 0-for-27 and 11 strikeouts. Also, the star shortstop has been suffering injuries all season. In addition, losing your leader while everybody else is struggling at the plate isn't good.
Things aren't looking good for the Rangers, and while things have looked mediocre this whole season, the final straw may be their choices at the trade deadline.
