Rangers Offseason Recap: What Does the Nathaniel Lowe Trade Mean?
By Jack Gurley
The Rangers front office has taken no days off so far during this very busy Christmas week. Sunday evening, it was announced that the Rangers decided to part ways with their longtime first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and traded him to the Washington Nationals. The move was made to shed some of their payroll and strengthen their currently dismantled bullpen.
Lowe will be sorely missed by the Rangers organization and their fans. He has been one of the most consistent and unproblematic members of the team since arriving in Texas in 2021. While Lowe has remained under the radar throughout his career, he has quietly become one of the best first basemen in the league, winning the Gold Glove award in 2023 and the Silver Slugger award in 2022.
While Lowe will be missed by the Rangers, he was, unfortunately, the cost of doing business this offseason. With the Rangers handcuffed financially and forced to prioritize their weakened pitching staff, Lowe was an unfortunate casualty of the Rangers' being forced to address their needs on a limited budget.
In return, Robert Garcia will join the Rangers' bullpen and hopefully help strengthen the Rangers' dismantled bullpen, which ranked in the bottom of several categories throughout last season.
Garcia has been rather unproven throughout his career so far. He made his professional debut last season and was given few opportunities with the team before being traded to the Nationals at the trade deadline. After being acquired by Washington, Garcia was able to finish the season with a respectable 3.69 ERA along with a 1.14 WHIP through 34 games.
Hopefully, Garcia can carry his success over to 2025 and help solidify the Rangers' bullpen, which is in desperate need of stable arms. With Garcia being one of several relief pitchers signed by the Rangers this offseason, it is clear that the team is serious about repairing its bullpen, which was clearly the team's weakest unit last season.
After trading Lowe away, the team did not stop there and quickly looked for someone to replace him in the lineup. The front office quickly landed on Joc Pederson, who has quietly been one of the most efficient offensive players these past few years.
Pederson remained a highly effective offensive player last year with the Diamondbacks, finishing with a solid .275/.393/.515 line and smashed 23 home runs through 132 games. The Rangers are hoping that Pederson can continue to produce solid offensive numbers for the Rangers going forward, as the team's lineup was a far cry from the lethal lineup we saw out of them in 2023.
It is yet to be announced what position Pederson will be playing for the Rangers, but it is to be assured that he could be filling a number of positions for the Rangers. Due to a currently shallow outfield, it is to be assumed that Pederson, a veteran outfielder, will be spending the majority of his season in the outfield.
While Pederson will likely spend most of his time with the Rangers in the outfield, it is also likely that he will have brief stints at first. While newly acquired slugger Jake Burger will be the Rangers' everyday first baseman, Burger's several prolonged stints on the IR could force Pederson to fill in at first periodically throughout the season.
Overall, the Rangers have had a very busy past two days, to say the least. While fans will be sad to see Lowe go, they should be thrilled to have Pederson's veteran presence in their lineup. Hopefully, Pederson can contribute to rejuvenating the team's lineup, which was underwhelming to put nicely through all of 2024.
