With drama surrounding the future of Dallas Cowboys star receiver George Pickens, it was fair to wonder whether the franchise could consider adding to the position early in this year's draft class. Not only is the future of Pickens unclear, but Jalen Tolbert departed in free agency, leaving a clear void that Ryan Flournoy is expected to fill. The pass catcher was coming off a breakout season with 475 receiving yards and four touchdowns in the 2025 campaign, and will be depended upon more this coming year.

While the Cowboys' stars dealt with various injuries, it was Flournoy who stepped up and produced at a shocking level. Still, it was a great season after an underwhelming rookie year, as the pass catcher managed just over 100 receiving yards during his first season as a pro. There was reason to wonder whether the lack of a resume and the questions around Pickens could lead the Cowboys to bring in competition or even spend an early pick on a clear starting option.

Instead, the only receiver the Cowboys added came in the draft's final round in Anthony Smith, who projects as a potential depth option. Flournoy made it through the draft and held onto his starting position, clearly becoming increasingly important within the Dallas offense.

For the Cowboys, it makes sense to bet on Flournoy with Pickens and CeeDee Lamb sitting atop the depth chart. Dallas has made its intentions clear regarding Pickens and how the team plans to handle the receiver, who clearly wants an earned extension.

Cowboys WR Ryan Flournoy Emerges as Clear Winner After 2026 Draft

If things turn sour with Pickens, it is now Flournoy, who will step into the WR2 role, becoming an even more important piece of the Dallas offense. Already, the decision not to draft highly at the position locks the pass catcher into the starting lineup and hands the receiver the chance to build on last season's clear chemistry with Dak Prescott.

It makes sense from the perspective of the Cowboys, who needed to focus this class on specific defensive improvements and searching for answers after having one of the league's worst defenses in the 2025 season. For Flournoy, the path is completely clear not only to step into the starting lineup even with Pickens playing, but to secure a larger role.

Lamb and Pickens will both demand the opposing team's best coverage options, as well as help over the top. This leaves Flournoy playing a team's third or fourth-best coverage option, consistently having a chance to take advantage of the shifted defensive focus. The draft decisions only furthered this opportunity, leaving the receiver in a great position heading into the 2026 season.
