Ryan Flournoy’s Week 15 Is Already Stacked Against Him Despite Breakout

Coming off a primetime breakout performance in last Thursday’s loss against the Detroit Lions, the second-year wideout caught nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown last week. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy is already facing a challenge in Week 15.

However, Flournoy did most of his damage after star receiver CeeDee Lamb exited the game with a concussion in the third quarter. Even then, one could argue that Flournoy thrived as a result of the Cowboys falling behind and needing to play catch-up down the stretch. Not to mention, George Pickens having his worst game of the season also helped Flournoy shine brighter.

As the Cowboys prepare to host the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night, all signs point to Lamb returning from his concussion.

Flournoy Must Perform Alongside Lamb, Pickens to Establish Himself as WR3

“He’s doing a good job. He’s meeting all the thresholds that you need to meet that will get him to where he can play this week,” Stephen Jones, Cowboys executive vice president, said on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “So far, he’s had no setbacks.”

In both of Flournoy’s standout games this season, Lamb got injured in some capacity. In Week 5 against the New York Jets, Flournoy caught six balls for 114 yards. That was the second consecutive game Lamb missed due to an ankle injury he suffered against the Chicago Bears. Against the Lions, Flournoy once again showed what he is capable of if given the opportunity.

Despite what this means for Flournoy’s outlook, this is a good problem to have for the Cowboys. Alongside two alpha receivers, Flournoy has proved he is an above-average WR3, a position the team has struggled to find a consistent option at.

Flournoy and the crew could also struggle to make their mark this week because of the defense they are going up against. The Vikings are the fourth-best passing defense in the NFL, allowing only 172.3 pass yards a game. Led by defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the Vikings have a great mix of pass rushers able to get to the quarterback and a secondary that is very stingy. The Cowboys will have their hands full in getting the ball to their playmakers.

With the Cowboys needing to run the table in hopes of a playoff spot, they will need all hands on deck. While Lamb’s return might mean Flournoy takes a step back, it is in the best interest of the team for the remainder of the season.
