The Dallas Cowboys' 2026 preseason has concluded. We have a lot of questions answered, like the large number of players not in pads for this one, but there's one obvious question Brian Schottenheimer has to have with Jerry and Stephen Jones.
Sam Howell came in for Joe Milton at the beginning of the third quarter. He didn't start well, as the Cowboys were down 24-9 in the fourth quarter, but eventually Howell threw two TDs and ran in a two-point conversion. The Cowboys lost 27-24, but Howell led a heck of a rally.
There's now a tough conversation to be had. Do the Cowboys want the traditional three-quarterback look? Or do they keep only two on the roster when it seems obvious that Milton would get the QB2 spot?

Usually, the conversation is about who should make the team over the other, but that's not the debate here.
Howell had a heck of a fourth quarter, throwing for two scores and taking a hit to tie the game. He led a comeback, and he should be proud of the effort he put together. He came up short on the last drive, but was it enough?
We know Milton makes the team, as he's already shown he can handle the QB duties. This is a big step up for him, as he was criticized last preseason for rushing his throws and throwing bullets when he didn't have to. He seemed much more in control, and there's no doubt he's backing up Dak Prescott.
Both quarterbacks were nearly equal, except that Milton did not throw a pick, but Howell did. But for Howell, he knew he was playing for a spot on the 53-man roster on that last drive. Even if he came up shy, he still deserves a look.
If Howell makes it, who misses out? Camden Brown, who had a heck of a preseason and lit up the field in all three games? Julius Wood? Drew Shelton?
It's a tough decision no matter what, but Howell put up a heck of a performance in the fourth quarter, and we already know he has a history of starting a full season at QB. He started all 17 games for the Washington Commanders in 2023 and has experience that Milton doesn't.
Two QBs on a roster in the NFL is pretty thin, though, but it's understood if the Cowboys decide to go that route. Howell has a chance, though, and will be considered for the final cuts.
