The Dallas Cowboys wrap up their mandatory minicamp on Thursday. Afterward, players get their much-deserved off time before the start of training camp at the end of July. Before the break, however, Dallas hosted multiple players for tryouts during minicamp.
According to Cowboys staff writer Patrik Walker, Dallas hosted five players, four defensive and one offensive, for a tryout during minicamp. Among those players was a former Super Bowl champion cornerback. Dallas could certainly use more depth at the position with Trevon Diggs set to miss the early part of the season due to a knee injury.
Cowboys Hosted Former Super Bowl Champion CB Robert Rochell for a Minicamp Tryout
Rochell began his career with the Los Angeles Rams after being selected with the 130th pick in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. During two seasons with the Rams, Rochell played 15 games (five starts) at cornerback.
In those games, he recorded 19 tackles, four pass deflections and one interception. Furthermore, during his rookie season, when he saw his most playing time on defense, he put up decent PFF grades. Rochell finished the 2021 season with a 63.8 run defense grade, a 60.7 coverage grade and a 61.9 overall grade, according to PFF.
Although he didn't cement himself as a starter, that's decent play for a fourth-round pick on a team that won the Super Bowl. That said, following the 2022 season, the 27-year-old was released by Los Angeles and was signed by the Green Bay Packers.
During his time in Green Bay, Rochell was a key special-teams player and barely saw the field at cornerback. Nevertheless, for a team like Dallas, who is looking for players to fill in while others get healthy, Rochell isn't the worst option.
Especially since new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has a track record of elevating lower-level defenders to players who can fill in adequately. It will certainly be interesting to see if Rochell ends up in Dallas for the 2025 season.
