The Dallas Cowboys knew they needed to make changes to the defensive side of the ball after how last season panned out. Rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. didn't play well, raising some questions surrounding him and his potential.
Although things didn't look pretty in 2025, Revel Jr. has a chance to be a major contributor for this team in 2026. And a big reason why is that Christian Parker is now the defensive coordinator. What he did with the Eagles can't be overlooked and should give fans reason for optimism around Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. Could Take Huge Strides in 2026 for Cowboys
While Revel Jr. was selected with the 76th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, he was still rehabbing from a torn ACL. He started the season out on the NFI (non-football injury) list before making his debut in November. As time went on, Revel Jr.'s playing time increased, but he still had his struggles.
In seven games (five starts), he finished with 35 total tackles and three pass deflections. Yet, his advanced numbers on Pro Football Focus weren't pretty. He finished with a 35.2 overall grade (114th among 114 graded CBs), 34.6 coverage grade (114th among 114 graded CBs), and a 48.1 run-defense grade (93rd among 114 graded CBs). He allowed 21 receptions (31 targets) for 295 yards and two scores.
Teams made sure to attack him in coverage but with a year of experience under his belt, things should improve. Especially with Parker running the show. During his time with the Eagles, he played a major role in the development of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Both players have emerged as one of the top cornerbacks in the league, which led to both of them being All-Pros in 2025.
When departing from the Eagles, DeJean gave Parker his flowers, saying, "What he's meant to me and Q, too. We've had a routine of me and Q go meet with him. two or three times a week just to go over the team we're playing, talk about different looks. And I don't think I'd be the player I am or I'd have the success that I've had without him."
Those words can't be understated, especially with how productive both guys were. He was also with the Denver Broncos from 2021-2023, crossing paths with Patrick Surtain and Justin Simmons. Those two players were exceptional during those seasons, and Parker's coaching helped play a role in that.
With him coming over to Dallas, Revel Jr. should be excited. He has a reputation for developing cornerbacks, and since that was a problem area for this team, that will be an area of focus. The improved coaching that Revel Jr. will get is something that will benefit him and the team in 2026. After being a weakness for Dallas last season, there's a great chance he takes steps forward in his development and actually becomes a contributor for this team.
