When it comes to NFL free agency, it is hard to blame a player for chasing the money, given how short careers in the league tend to be. While the opportunity to cash in will always be enticing to a player hitting the open market, the outcome doesn't always put them in a better situation, beyond their respective paycheck.

For former Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard, that has been the moral of the story after he left America's Team to sign a three-year, $21.75 million contract with the Tennessee Titans. Despite this representing a quasi-homecoming for Pollard, who was born and raised in Memphis, wins on the field have been few and far between for the former Cowboy, as Tennessee has a 6-27 record with the rusher in the lineup.

With a brand new coaching staff taking over in Nashville, and Pollard entering the final season of that three-year pact he signed in March of 2024, it seems safe to say that the veteran is wasting away the prime years of his career in a place that has no interest in winning right now.

Tony Pollard Continues to Trend Downward After Dallas Exit

While it is likely a byproduct of the sheer lack of talent around him in the Titans' offense, the numbers don't lie when you compare what the back has accomplished in Tennessee to what he did in Dallas, before being paid handsomely. In fact, to this day, Pollard's 2022 campaign with the Cowboys was far and away his most productive season as a professional, as his 12 total touchdowns earned him his only Pro Bowl appearance.

That level of production was enough to convince the Titans' front office to open their checkbook for Pollard, but Tennessee had to have hoped to get more out of this signing than they have to this point. In two seasons with the Titans, Pollard has 10 total touchdowns to go along with six fumbles. That matches the same number of fumbles that the former Memphis Tigers standout had in 79 total games with Dallas.

On top of his inability to find the end zone at the same rate and an uptick in ball protection issues, Pollard's rushing and receiving numbers have remained largely unchanged, despite being in more of a feature role than he ever received before his final season with the Cowboys. With the running back set to turn 29 years old at the end of April, Pollard will need to defy Father Time, as well as everything we have seen from him on the field in Nashville, to even be a somewhat attractive option on the free agent market in 2027.

While none of this is to suggest Pollard would have built on his Pro Bowl status had he remained in Dallas, there is little doubt that the decision to join the Titans hurt the value he carries at his position.
