Trevon Diggs' Cowboys Fate Likely Sealed After Jerry Jones' Latest Remarks

Jones has every right to be skeptical of Diggs at this point.

Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback Trevon Diggs’ time with America’s Team is likely coming to an end. The 2021 First Team All-Pro hasn’t been the same player he was when he led the NFL in interceptions that season (11) since tearing his ACL in September 2023. Health has since been an issue for Diggs, likely causing the decline in his play on the field.

Heading into this season, though, there was hope around the organization and fan base that he could return to peak form after a successful recovery from another injury on the same knee last season. However, that was not the case through the first six weeks of the season.

Diggs didn’t look good. He wasn’t the shutdown, ball-hawk cornerback fans knew him to be at the height of his powers. To be fair to Diggs, though, the entire secondary looked bad, which cannot be understated given how poorly the hire of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has gone. The duo of Diggs and DaRon Bland has a combined contract value of $187 million, but they haven't lived up to that status. Diggs, in particular, in the six games he’s played, hasn’t recorded a pass-defending stat.

Things then got weird between Diggs and the Cowboys when Diggs suffered a concussion in a home-related incident. The injury initially didn’t sound too serious; however, he was placed on injury reserve and will now miss his fifth consecutive game, and potentially more.

Jerry Jones Doesn't Paint Promising Picture For Diggs' Dallas Future

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones added some salt to the wound when he was asked on 105.3 The Fan how confident he is in Diggs’ ability to return to the level they need him to.

“I don’t know. No one knows. We’ll just see how it goes. He’s obviously been limited, so we’ll just see how that goes,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic

Jones prefaced those comments by saying the return of a healthy, good Diggs could definitely make the Cowboys a better team. Despite that, his skepticism is fair.

“I think if Diggs plays at the level that he’s expected to play, yes. A big yes," Jones said when addressing the impact Diggs can have on this team when healthy. "It’s just amazing what additional healthy talent can do for your execution and game plan. And frankly, the production of the players that are playing around that returning player. So, the answer is a big yes there.”

Something also worth noting is that the Cowboys traded his best buddy, Micah Parsons, in the offseason. Diggs advocated for the team to sign Parsons to an extension. The duo were inseparable, and it is hard to believe both the Cowboys and Diggs have a bad taste in their mouth about that.

Diggs will be eligible to return on Thanksgiving against the Kansas City Chiefs. With the revamped defense as is, his addition could bring another element to a team competing for a playoff spot down the stretch.
