When the Dallas Cowboys suddenly released Trevon Diggs with one game left in the regular season, it left many shocked. There was an inkling that things were bad, but not to the point of parting ways before the season ended.
That said, it didn’t take long for Diggs to find his next opportunity, as he was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers. This was an ideal situation for Diggs to prove to the Cowboys that they made a mistake.
Diggs was thrown into the fire by Green Bay in Week 18, playing 35 total snaps (33 on defense), and had a passer rating of 45.2. It was a solid debut by Diggs, and one would think it would’ve gotten him more playing time in the wild-card game vs. the Chicago Bears.
However, that didn’t happen as the Packers kept him on the sidelines. The ex-Cowboys CB played one snap in the wild-card loss and didn’t look great, which caught the attention of many Dallas fans.
Diggs was seen playing way off the line of scrimmage on 3rd-and-eight, and somehow out of position on a screen pass, which led to a Bears’ first down. If that was his final play in a Packers uniform, some within the fanbase will be okay with that, as they would rather see the veteran cornerback cut.
Trevon Diggs Likely Making Other Plans After Packers' Playoff Loss
When the Packers claimed Diggs off waivers in Week 18, it wasn’t guaranteed that they would keep him around going into next season. Since he was a waiver claim, it means that Green Bay owns the rights to his contract.
Now, Diggs doesn’t have any more guaranteed money left on his contract. However, he’s still under contract until after the 2028 season. Looking at Diggs’ cap hits for the next few years (per Spotrac), the Packers likely don’t want to be on the hook for that.
- 2026 - $15.5 million
- 2027 - $20.5 million
- 2028 - $21 million
Therefore, the likely path for the Packers is cutting Diggs, which will save them money that they can use elsewhere.
If Green Bay goes that route, they could explore a smaller deal at a cheaper price tag than the $15 million for 2026 with Diggs. However, seeing the former Cowboy defender play one snap is not a good look, especially when the Packers don’t have the best CB2 situation as is.
In all likelihood, Diggs is headed toward his third team since this past December when free agency opens in March.
