The Dallas Cowboys have been fairly quiet this offseason in regard to adding talent via free agency and the trade market.

On Thursday, they made a surprising move when they acquired QB Joe Milton from the New England Patriots for a 2025 fifth-round pick.

That came after they decided not to re-sign Trey Lance in free agency. There were rumors that Lance was on the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders radar but those were put to rest when the Los Angeles Chargers signed Lance.

Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Chargers and Lance agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million deal.

Trey Lance Lands With the Los Angeles Chargers

In August 2023, the Cowboys made a dart throw and traded for Lance. They gave the San Francisco 49ers a 2024 fourth-round pick for Lance but nothing materialized from that addition. He ended up starting in just one game for Dallas, going 25-of-41 for 266 passing yards and one interception.

Despite being the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the 24-year-old has just five starts under his belt. The North Dakota State product struggled to stay healthy in San Francisco, suffering a knee sprain and a fractured ankle in the span of two years.

That limited his ability to develop after he started 19 games in college. The Cowboys wanted to give him a chance to become a high-end QB2 but that never transpired. They decided to go down that same path with Milton instead and Lance got another chance in the NFL.

This could very well be his last opportunity to show teams around the league what he has. If things don't pan out, there's a good chance that he ends up playing in the CFL.

Even though he hasn't produced in the NFL, the Chargers seemed to be intrigued with his physical tools and believe they could get the most out of him.
