The Dallas Cowboys were ready to turn the page on Cooper Rush after an underwhelming second half of the season in the starting lineup. While the backup quarterback is a safe option, there simply isn't a ceiling to consistently winning games if Dak Prescott isn't in the starting lineup.
With this in mind, the Cowboys opted to go out and trade for former New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton. The backup was given a start at the end of the 2024 season and looked incredible. It was enough to earn the attention of Dallas and make the franchise willing to give up a draft pick to add the new backup.
This leaves third-string option Will Grier in an interesting situation as we approach training camp.
The Cowboys Should Consider Parting Ways With Will Grier
Grier is a low-end backup at this stage of his career. The Cowboys don't bring a lot of value by retaining the quarterback on the roster. While the league now allows teams to carry three quarterbacks with the third not counting against a roster spot, it is still likely that Dallas explores a change.
The Cowboys would be wise to use the third quarterback spot to find someone they believe has a chance to develop into a viable option. The problem with keeping Grier on the roster is the fact that you know the quarterback isn't going to be anything other than what he is currently. If things go sideways with your first two options, there is zero interest in seeing what the quarterback can do.
Whether in free agency or looking at roster cuts during the preseason, it isn't going to be hard to find an option with more upside. The Cowboys need to utilize the spot to attempt to find someone they believe has a chance to develop into a more capable option.
Barring unforeseen changes, Grier should be a roster cut this summer in favor of an unknown. It is the clear path to take for a franchise entering a pivotal season, attempting to fight back to relevance.
