Could the Dallas Cowboys trade from a position of strength to address a position of weakness? Turning QB Tony Romo into DE DeMarcus Ware would do just that.

The Dallas Cowboys suddenly have an embarrassment of riches on their hands. With both rookie sensation Dak Prescott and proven Pro Bowler Tony Romo on the roster, the Dallas Cowboys arguably have the best QB situation in the NFL.

One team who potentially is in need of a decent QB is the Denver Broncos. The defending Super Bowl champs are trying to repeat their 2015 performance, sans their top two signal callers from last season.

Armed with the wildly mediocre Trevor Siemian at QB, the Broncos are rolling the dice that their defense can carry their team to glory once again. And maybe it can but maybe it will take a QB like Romo to put them over the top.

With the clock ticking on Tony Romo’s Cowboys’ career, wouldn’t it be nice to turn the loss of an icon into the return of a legend?

Since both teams have complementary strengths and weakness, why not contemplate a mutually beneficial trade?

 Needs

The Denver Broncos defense is good. Really good. They are so dominant that it’s believed nearly any QB could guide them to glory.

Trevor may be good enough, but a healthy Tony Romo could easily put them over the top. Trading Ware from the defense would certainly have a negative impact, but the positive impact a player like Romo could have on their offense would be substantially more.

Since DeMarcus Ware has been out most of the season with a broken arm, the Broncos know they can get the job done in his absence. The risk is there, but the reward is tantalizing.

The Dallas Cowboys have yet to officially name a starter once Tony Romo is deemed ready and able. Many are speculating that Dak will keep the job as long as the momentum continues.

And the Cowboys also have a dire need at defensive end. Even with the return of DeMarcus Lawrence, the Cowboys are #24 in sacks this season. Their surprising success on defense has more to do with poor performing QBs and unforced turnovers, than stellar play. As such, the need for an improved pass-rush is every bit as true today as it was the day DeMarcus Ware left the Cowboys nearly three years ago.

The Contracts

OK, this is where it gets a little far-fetched. The cost of moving Tony Romo this season is extremely significant. I’m talking north of $40M dead money kinda significant. Because of this, it would be VERY difficult for the Cowboys to cut or trade their Pro Bowl signal-caller.

But if the Cowboys were truly convinced that Dak Prescott is ready right now. And that Tony Romo is at his most valuable right now. A trade could make sense. The reason the Broncos work so well as a trade partner is because they are stacked in the pass-rusher department and can trade one without hurting their chances at repeating. Not many other QB-needy teams can say that today.

Another barrier to overcome is DeMarcus Ware’s contract situation. According to Sportac.com, DeMarcus Ware is playing on the last year of his 3 yr/$30M contract he signed back in 2014. He’s going to be a free agent in a few months anyway so why would the Cowboys trade a valuable piece like Romo for a guy who’s about to walk?

The Romance

I’d be lying if romance didn’t play a part in all of this. Tony Romo may very well reclaim the QB1 job this season, but his days are severely numbered and it would be absolutely shocking if he returned in 2017.

Smart money says DeMarcus Ware ends up back in Dallas before all is said and done, and it won’t require a trade to make it happen.

Ware has always meant a lot to this city and this franchise, and if used correctly, he could be a major factor once again.

Production is a question both players face. Tony Romo has had some pretty significant injuries as of late and may never be a reliable option again. When he plays, he’s among the best in the game, but that assumes a lot.

DeMarcus Ware has quite the dominant past but has always had a history of slowing down at season’s end. The good news is, like last season, he’s missed a significant portion earlier in the year. This means he won’t wear down like he did in his Cowboys’ days (look it up) and he should be an impact player in December and January.

Both players are old, injury prone, and have a very significant risk/reward disclaimer attached to them. But both players could also put franchises over the top and make for a truly win-win kind of trade. Is it going to happen this season? Probably not, but it’s a fun thing to consider when you’re 5-1, ranked #4 in the power rankings, have your QB, RB, and entire offensive line set up for the next 10 years.

It may not happen this season but don’t be surprised if you see Tony Romo playing elsewhere and DeMarcus Ware reclaiming that #94 jersey in Dallas next season.
