Since Nolan Carroll was arrested for a DUI and will face discipline by the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys should trade for Richard Sherman.

The Dallas Cowboys lost four key defensive backs to free agency, Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr, J.J. Wilcox, and Barry Church. And it looks like they’re going to lose free agent signee Nolan Carroll, too, after his recent arrest.

The Cowboys secondary took another hit when cornerback Carroll was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. This is a significant blow to the Cowboys defensive backfield because they were depending on Carroll to soften the blow of losing Claiborne and Carr.

I’m 100 percent certain disciplinary action will be taken by the league for Carroll driving while intoxicated. That means Carroll will be suspended and miss several games, leaving the secondary with Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown as the only experienced corners.

The Cowboys did draft corners Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, Marquez White, and safety Xavier Woods. However, Lewis is facing his own legal troubles as he plead not guilty on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge.

I’m suggesting that if Dallas wants to win the NFC East this season, get a first round bye, and compete for a Super Bowl next year, they better trade for Sherman. Period.

According to Lewis, he expects to be exonerated once the case goes to trial later this summer. Add the pending suspension of defensive lineman David Irving, and the Cowboys defense is sinking faster than the Titanic.

Already viewed as the weakest link on the team, Dallas’ defense needs all of the help it can get, not lose it because of stupid decision making.

Having said that, Dallas needs to make a trade for Richard Sherman. That’s right, the loud-mouth, All-Pro corner who talks the talk and shuts down the opposing team’s best wide receiver. There is no need to wait and see what the league will do to Carroll, or Lewis for that matter.

Why Dallas Needs Sherman

Dallas needs to make a run at Sherman while he’s still available and because the Seattle Seahawks openly tried to trade Sherman during the draft. So Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones need to sit down and decide what they’ll give up for Sherman.

Of course, I’m not suggesting Jerry and Stephen give up a kings ransom to acquire Sherman. Let’s not get carried away.

It’s as simple as 1 +1= 2.

What Sherman Brings

One of the main reasons Dallas needs to make a trade for Sherman is because he’ll be an instant upgrade in their secondary and possibly be the missing link this team desperately desires.

Sherman can cover the opposing team’s best wide receiver, which will be a tremendous boost to defensive coordinator Rod Marillini’s Cover 2 scheme. Not to mention, Sherman also could cover the opposing team’s number 2 receiver while the other corners double team the primary receiver.

The best example would be Sherman matched up against the New York Giants wide out Sterling Shepard, and Anthony Brown and safety Byron Jones double team Pro Bowler Odell Beckham, Jr.

Or Sherman could play OBJ straight up and watch quarterback Eli Manning throw one of his predictable interceptions, hopefully a pick-6. With Sherman covering an opposing team’s best receiver or just being on the field, his presence would be felt.

Quarterbacks will either throw his way or throw to their second, third, or fourth options. That’s fine, too, because it neutralizes the opposing team’s offense.

Sherman covering the other team’s best receiver will allow the other corners to take chances — like jumping routes.

Sherman’s covering skills can lead to coverage sacks, too. And we all know how bad this defense needs to rack up sacks.

Another reason Dallas should trade for Sherman is because of his leadership skills. I’m aware that Sherman is outspoken, but he’s passionate about the right things and leads by example. His work ethic is superb, he’s a student of the game, and he can educate Dallas’ rookies.

If you’re worried about Sherman’s outspokeness, you shouldn’t be. Here is a man that is rightfully  questioning head coach Pete Carroll about legit football matters concerning the Seahawks, a team that Sherman helped to two Super Bowls, winning one.

Besides, it’s Carroll who fostered a culture where players could question his in-game decisions, not the other way around. Can you blame Sherman for criticizing Carroll for calling a pass play at the goal line instead of running the ball with Marshawn Lynch in the Super Bowl?

Sherman is also taking up for his defense, who is constantly being blamed for the Seawhawks failures, and not quarterback Russell Wilson. But that topic is for another day.

With talented rookie corners on Dallas’roster, Sherman can teach them how to play the corner position, how to use proper technique, being confident, and how to be a student of the game.

These things are bonuses.

The Trade

Site expert Reid Hanson recently wrote an article about Dallas trading Orlando Scandrick for  Sherman, an interesting trade scenario. As Reid pointed out, it probably won’t happen.

But what if Dallas added their 2018 second round pick to go along with Scandrick? Would that be enough to entice the Seahawks?

How about Dallas trade their 2018 and 2019 second round picks to the  Seahawks for Sherman?

Considering Sherman is approaching age 30, that’s all Dallas should give up for Sherman, nothing more than that.

Also, Sherman told friends he imagined himself playing for the Cowboys. That’s an extra bonus for Dallas, too.

Last week, I wrote about how Dallas should trade for pass rusher Sheldon Richardson. My main sticking point in that article is that Dallas is one dominant defensive player away from making a run to the Super Bowl.

In addition, I addressed how Dallas traded for future Hall of Famer Charles Haley back in 1992 and they won three Lombardi trophies in four years.

Dallas is in a similar situation. Trading for a pass rusher would be idea for this team, but with a pending suspension for Irving and the recent arrest of Carroll, Dallas has to make a move right now.

To some degree, it’s a toss up between Richardson or Sherman. A defensive lineman or a corner.

So why not trade for Sherman?

He’s only a four-time Pro Bowler, the best corner in the NFL, and a Super Bowl champion!
