Stars Trade Daley, Garbutt For Patrick Sharp
By Cole Mentzel
Surprise Stars fans! Jim Nill is back at it again! He completed another great deal in which Ryan Garbutt and Trevor Daley were shipped to Chicago for Patrick Sharp and Steven Johns. It’s gotten to where we expect things like this to happen as Stars fans, but I sure did not see this going down, especially with the Blackhawks large asking price just a few weeks ago.
This move puts the finishing touches on what is going to be a VERY exciting top line in Dallas consisting of Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Patrick Sharp. I think it’s pretty obvious that Jim Nill is ready for this team to take the next step and he wants them to win now. Sharp is a veteran leader with three Stanley Cups and he will thrive with Benn and Seguin.

On to the other player added in this trade: Steven Johns. This young prospect is tremendous defenseman that a lot of fans from Chicago were upset about losing. He is 6’4 and weighs 230, not to mention he has a right-handed shot. His physicality really adds to his game and he isn’t too far from having a normal role in the NHL. The Stars got a steal with this kid.
Now the Stars did have to give up a few fan favorites in Ryan Garbutt and Trevor Daley. Garbutt was known for his physical play and was often the next best goal scorer behind Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. Daley had played for the Stars since the 2003 season and was one of the most consistent, fan-friendly players in Dallas. He is one player that the Stars franchise and it’s fans will truly never forget.

According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, the Stars retained 50% of Garbutt’s cap hit and salary so the Blackhawks will end up getting him for 900k, one of the main reasons the trade was able to be completed. The Stars are taking Patrick Sharp full-on with a $5.9 million cap hit. Sharp’s contract will come off the books at the same time that Jamie Benn’s does. The Blackhawks will be taking on all of Daley’s cap hit. One of the main reasons the Blackhawks decided to go ahead and make this trade was because of the cap flexibility it gave them.
Jim Nill also added that the Stars might not be done making deals this summer. Trading Daley opens up a new spot for a defenseman but if nothing great comes along, I expect the Stars to stay put. They have a good enough team right now.
Since Jim Nill came on the scene in Dallas a few years ago, he has traded for Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza, Antti Niemi and now Patrick Sharp. It’s obvious he is doing incredible things for the Stars franchise and I don’t expect it to slow down anytime soon. He is determined to get the Cup back to Dallas.
With this move, the Stars still may not be ready to contend but they certainly got a lot closer. With big moves like this, the Stars are going to keep improving and it’s exciting to think about the future of this team. Keep a close eye on Dallas next season!
