Cowboys Re-Sign Cornerback Josh Thomas

One year, terms undisclosed

The Dallas secondary recorded exactly two interceptions last year.

Two.

Both were claimed by players not named Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne or Orlando Scandrick – the last player listed here was injured for the season as training camp ended.

In trying to find a way to change this dynamic, the Cowboys are shaking things up a bit in the secondary. We’ll discuss Claiborne shortly, but for now, the re-signing of Josh Thomas serves as primarily a depth move that may or may not end up meaning anything down the road.

Thomas rejoined the Cowboys last season towards the very end after being released by the Indianapolis Colts. The Cedar Hill product was actually drafted by the Cowboys in 2011 but never made the roster that season. He’s been around the league at this point but only has one career interception to his credit.

Because you can never have too many cornerbacks, adding Thomas is not much more than a solid and  inexpensive move. Further, I’ll always take a veteran cover guy over any rookie and this re-acquisition keeps the Cowboys with an ample supply of veteran corners while also staying relatively young.

It’s looking more and more like the Cowboys are positioning themselves to either get Carr at a cheaper price, or simply release him.

Thomas isn’t going to take anybody’s starting job, but he keeps the cupboard well stocked as Dallas likely looks to add even more depth in it’s defensive backfield this offseason.
