Dallas Cowboys: Hot Takes From 2019 NFL Scouting Combine
Brian Burns will be selected before Josh Allen…
Here’s a take that is solely combine based. Burns rocked the combine so much that he was a standout in my article which you can find here. Burns proved he could add weight and still test extremely well. He was projected to go in early in the first round, but his combine performance may have done more than he thought it would.
It’s not often, but teams will pick certain players with less production because of their higher athletic upside. This strategy has proven to work both ways. However, in the case of Burns, the production isn’t significantly worse than Allen’s. Burns still had 10 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss according to Sports Reference.
Burns has substantial production and the athleticism to make him stand out at the next level. Allen is going to be a star in this league and I expect to some degree so will Burns. However, a team like San Francisco or Oakland in need of some edge pass rushing could feel compelled to select the better athlete than the better production.
In all, this take isn’t really that “hot” but it’s worth noting teams place a heavy emphasis on prospects film. Allen undoubtedly has the better film but if teams feel the opportunity cost of selecting a guy with good film and more athleticism is better, they should lean that direction.
