Building 53-man rosters is a tricky endeavor. The Dallas Cowboys have to balance immediate gratification with delayed gratification and that’s not always easy to do. The fear is by taking a short-sighted approach you risk cutting a potential star player just because he’s a project.

We build the Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster with a focus on potential, favoring high-ceiling players over the high-floor alternatives.

In previous months we’ve build rosters balancing both. The post draft version here and the post mini-camp version here made some surprise predictions but overall took a pretty responsible approach.

This time we’re throwing caution to the wind and targeting the potential stars. Veterans who have tapped their potential and/or are on the decline need not apply. We’re rolling the dice and going for the gold.

Jonathan Garibay, Brian Anger, Jake McQuaide

The Dallas Cowboys have already taken the first step in building an all-potential special teams unit when they let the veteran Greg Zuerlein walk in free agency. He might have seemed like like a miss waiting to happen to Cowboys Nation but the numbers showed he was actually pretty reliable on field goals under 50 yards.

Garibay doesn’t have the track record or consistency of Zuerlein on <50 yards FGs but he’s got the leg to deliver the long ball. Garibay’s a developing kicker who’s yet to reach his physical potential. With one of the better FG% of the draft class and one of the strongest legs in the NFL, Garibay delivers on the promise of potential.

Brian Anger and Jake McQuaide aren’t exactly young developing stars but they are certainly at the peak of their profession. If Garibay hits, this could be one of the best special teams trios in the NFL.
