Entering the 2025 NFL Draft, the running back position was thought to be an area of need for the Dallas Cowboys by fans and many pundits alike. Well, it took them until Day 3 but the Cowboys have finally added another rusher to the running back room and it is a name that Dallas fans are likely very familiar with.
Former University of Texas Longhorns standout Jaydon Blue is a Dallas Cowboy after the team made the call to select the Houston native with the No. 149 overall pick. Blue was only a full-time starter for one season in Austin but he learned from a pair of current NFL running backs, Bijan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks, before taking the reins for himself.
With the type of explosive athleticism that Blue possesses, he could instantly become a home run threat in the Cowboys' offense each and every time the ball winds up in his hands. A threat that is needed in Dallas right now, despite the offseason additions of Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams.
While it is impossible to know what the running back room will look like a year from now, both Williams and Sanders are slated to be unrestricted free agents following the 2025 season, Blue has the mold of a player that could ultimately work his way into the starting lineup for the Cowboys, much like Rico Dowdle did during his tenure in Dallas.
In order for that to happen though, Blue will have to improve in areas in order to match the explosive potential to break a run for a score if he finds green grass in front of him. Like most running backs who are slighter in stature, pass blocking will be an area he will need to put the necessary work in to improve, as protecting Dak Prescott is a priority for the Cowboys front office.
We'll find out soon enough what type of career Blue has in Dallas, but the potential for him to be a key contributor in the backfield is certainly there.
