The Dallas Cowboys are under significant, warranted fire for Jerry Jones' underwhelming hire of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach. Jones preferred an easy decision instead of one that'd challenge his decreasing sense of superiority, and now he's made another poor decision.

Whether or not Schottenheimer's latest addition to his coaching staff was Jones' decision isn't clear, perhaps even unlikely. Nonetheless, Jones has made it obvious that everything revolves around him, so Dallas' new head coach at least had to get Jones' approval in all likelihood.

Nick Sorenson is the Cowboys' special teams coordinator now, a choice that looked foolish even before it happened.

Cowboys Hire Nick Sorenson as Special Teams Coordinator

This might wind up being a wise hire. On it's face? It looks like another mistake from an organization all-too-familiar with poor decisions. Schottenheimer served as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator in 2024, leading a defense that ranked 29th in opponent points per game (29.5).

That's not necessarily his calling card though, as Sorenson was the Jacksonville Jaguars' special teams coordinator in 2021. Unfortunately, that didn't go well either as the Jaguars were widely considered to be a bottom-five special teams unit that year, ranking fourth-worst at Pro Football Focus with an overall grade of 68.4.

Even if you believe in Schottenheimer's vision, it's hard to argue that Sorenson is an inspiring hire. Purely based on his resume, there isn't much to point to in terms of success, which falls in line with Jones' preferred method of operation. Winning isn't important; bowing to the king is all that matters.

In all likelihood, the Cowboys will once again endure a mediocre season, just good enough to avoid a top draft pick but unimpeachably bad enough to have no chance at real success. That's Jones' legacy and these decisions only prove that concept.
