Brian Schottenheimer Considering Nightmare Hire for Cowboys Coordinator Job
By Chris Schad
The Dallas Cowboys want to improve on their 7-10 season from a year ago and letting go of Mike McCarthy was the first step of the process. While that decision represented an opportunity for a clean slate, many have been skeptical after the Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach on Monday.
The move hasn’t inspired confidence as Jerry Jones revealed that several coaches reached out to the Cowboys about the vacancy. Hall of Famer Michael Irvin also criticized the decision, making Schottenheimer’s presence polarizing even before leading Dallas onto the field.
But as Schottenheimer constructs his staff, there’s likely to be more questionable decisions including his reported target for the team’s special teams coordinator.
Dallas Cowboys Likely to Target Nick Sorensen as Special Teams Coordinator
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are expected to target Nick Sorensen as their special teams coordinator. Sorensen spent most of his professional career as an assistant special teams coach and defensive backs coach while Schottenheimer was with the Seattle Seahawks but has spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, serving as defensive coordinator last season.
The stint with the 49ers wasn’t promising as San Francisco ranked 29th in points allowed but eighth in yardage during Sorensen’s lone season. The 46-year-old also had a previous stint as a special teams coordinator on Urban Meyer’s staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 but that didn’t go well either as Jacksonville had the second-lowest field goal percentage (81.6%) and had the fourth-lowest Pro Football Focus grade at 68.4.
Sorensen would be working with a better cast in Dallas as Brandon Aubrey has made the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons and ranked 17th with a team special teams grade of 78.5. But it also feels like the type of connection that is based on a previous relationship more than a qualification.
This is the biggest issue that fans have when it comes to Schottenheimer’s hiring and it could play out as he assembles his staff in the coming weeks.
