Cowboys Legend Sounds Off on Team's Head Coach Decision
Dallas Cowboys fans were shocked when the team announced Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach on Friday. Even though the 51-year-old coach spent the last two seasons as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator, the fanbase was hoping for a fresh start on the bench after the franchise missed the NFL playoffs this month.
With Schottenheimer lacking NFL head coaching experience, Cowboys fans are understandably frustrated about the team's outlook. It's gotten to the point where one of the franchise's most beloved fan favorites can't help but express his frustration.
Cowboys News: Michael Irvin Sounds Off on Brian Schottenheimer Hiring
Sunday was awful for Cowboys fans as they were forced to watch the rival Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles duking it out in the NFC Championship Game. Former Dallas wideout Michael Irvin used the occasion as the perfect time to sound off on his former team's latest coaching decision.
"The Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders, our enemies on all fronts. And they’re in a position that we haven’t held in 30 [expletive] years," Irvin said on his YouTube channel. "We’re losing ground in the NFC. That’s 30 damn years. Forty years is a generation."
After missing the 2024-25 playoffs with a 7-10 record, Irvin hoped to see Jerry Jones hire someone who "could shake things up and grab this last leg of Cowboys Nation." The Pro Football Hall of Famer wanted to see Colorado Buffaloes HC — and former Cowboy — Deion Sanders hired instead and was "shocked" that he didn't get the job.
"Jerry's a shrewd businessman and this opportunity (to hire Sanders), I'm shocked he did not see," Irvin said. "I was pushing for Deion Sanders to be the next head coach and I still stand 10 toes down on that push."
Although Sanders has never coached at the NFL level, Cowboys supporters — including Irvin — were willing to shake up the status quo. The former dual-sport athlete has completely transformed the University of Colorado's football program, leaving Dallas fans fantasizing if he could have a similar impact in the Lone Star State.
Instead of trying something new, the Cowboys are rolling with Schottenheimer — someone whom Irvin is unsure about when it comes to restoring the glory of America's Team.
"A third of Cowboys Nation has never felt or lived the glory of a championship story," Irvin added. "Worse yet, that generation has seen total domination from a team named the Kansas City Chiefs."
"Not only are you losing football games over here and opportunities over here and divisions over here, you’re about to get our (America’s Team) moniker snatched off our backs."
The Chiefs have an opportunity to win their third consecutive Super Bowl in February — something neither the Cowboys, nor any other NFL team have ever done. If Jones & Co. want to reach similar success soon, they better hope that Schottenheimer proves Irvin wrong by showing that he's the right man for the job.
