With A.J. Brown gone to the New England Patriots, there's no way to deny that the Dallas Cowboys have the best wide receiver corps in the NFC East. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy can feast in Brian Schottenheimer's offense.
Notably, the Washington Commanders might attempt to challenge the Cowboys' supremacy at the position. They won't bring Deebo Samuel back, so they still need someone to line up opposite Terry McLaurin.
While that should be a concern for Jerry Jones' team, it looks like the Commanders might be walking themselves into an absolute nightmare. All signs point to Brandon Aiyuk, and that would be major comedic relief for the Cowboys and their fans.
The Commanders are suitors to add Brandon Aiyuk amid a toxic offseason
According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to release Aiyuk after more than a year of drama. In a separate report, he confirmed the Commanders' intention to add another pass catcher before training camp.
While that doesn't necessarily mean that Aiyuk will be that guy, the writing has been on the wall for months. He's a close friend and a former college teammate of Jayden Daniels, and he even posed with a Commanders hat in a photo for his Instagram story.
The Commanders will most likely get him at a major discount, but even the cheapest things can be expensive. Spotrac has Aiyuk's market value at a $12.3 million AAV. He's been a handful even before getting his big-money deal, and that won't change in the nation's capital.
Dan Quinn's team is looking to bounce back after -- predictably -- regressing in year two of the Jayden Daniels era. Adding a huge ego to their locker room won't help alleviate the pressure, and it's not like he should be considered a star anymore.
It's been two years since Aiyuk played his last game, and he was already having trouble living up to his big contract before he got hurt. He reportedly didn't approach his rehab professionally, and he's been on the record as calling his team "dumb." That's not a guy who wants to be coached.
We've seen this story countless times, but unlike with guys like Antonio Brown, who were actually stars, Aiyuk hasn't earned his stripes. He had one great season, and he's created way too much trouble for a player with a second-team All-Pro selection three years ago.
The Cowboys are going for the big prize this season, not only in the NFC East but in the entire league. As such, watching divisional rivals make huge and avoidable mistakes is just comedy gold. Every tiny bit of help is welcome, and there's just no way they won't regret adding a ticking time bomb to their locker room.
