After arguably the team’s best defensive performance of the season against the Washington Commanders last week, the Dallas Cowboys are riding on their high horse into Week 8. However, the defense still has much to prove going forward.

Considering the lack of firepower on offense for the Commanders, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they were held to only 22 points. Second-year QB Jayden Daniels was missing three of his top targets in Deebo Samuel, Terry McLaurin, and Noah Brown. And that was all before Daniels eventually left the game in the third quarter due to injury.

The Cowboys' pass rush showed the ability to get after Daniels, recording four sacks and seven tackles for losses. The front seven’s pressure, consequently, got the secondary to look better despite missing Trevon Diggs. DaRon Bland had his best game of the season (22.4 passer rating allowed when targeted), which was highlighted by a 68-yard pick-six off Marcus Mariota.

Cowboys' Defense Can't Rest on Their Laurels Heading into Week 8

With all that being said, the defense needs to replicate a similar performance against a better Denver Broncos' offense in Week 8.

Dallas still ranks dead last in total defense (401.6 yards per game allowed) and in pass defense (260.3), while being 30th against the run (141.3) -- a complete 360-degree change from what the offense is. If Dallas hopes to make it to the postseason, the defense must be drastically better.

This improvement could happen in a couple of ways. Players such as DeMarvion Overshown and Shavon Revel Jr. making their return to the lineup, or Jerry Jones makes a splash in the trade market. The Cowboys approach Week 8 in the midst of rumors that Jones and the front office contacted the Las Vegas Raiders regarding their interest in Maxx Crosby. The potential acquisition of a two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler would undeniably make the defense better.

However, the worst phase of the defense (secondary) may still be exposed, but a move like that could benefit that unit. Trevon Diggs and Bland have thrived the most in their tenures with the team when the defensive line is formidable in applying pressure. It allows them to play the style of man coverage that can lead to takeaway opportunities.

For the Cowboys to be considered a true contender, changes still need to be made on the defense, but hopefully they can carry last week’s momentum into Denver and leave with a victory.
