The Dallas Cowboys have big decisions to make this offseason. The most significant of them all is obviously the head coaching hire. After parting ways with Mike McCarthy earlier in the week, the Cowboys immediately began their search for his replacement.

The coaching staff isn't the only thing in desperate need of overhaul in Dallas. The Cowboys will once again be in a financial crunch and will have to make hard decisions building the 2025 roster.

The defensive side of the ball will be especially important. After being some of the stingiest defensive units in the league under Dan Quinn, the Cowboys took a massive step back under Mike Zimmer. The injuries obviously took a toll but allowing the second-most points of any team in the league is completely unacceptable.

One change that makes sense for the Cowboys in the offseason would be to move on from veteran safety Donovan Wilson. The six-year veteran is entering the final year of the three-year, $21 million extension he signed back in 2023. Since then, he has been a reliable contributor but hasn't been a big difference-maker for the Cowboys.

Instead of letting him play out the final year of his deal, the Cowboys would be wise to see what they can get for Wilson before his age-30 season. The veteran safety will likely continue his age-related decline, as he already received a career-worst 62.2 PFF grade in 2024.

The Cowboys have Juanyeh Thomas and Israel Mukuamu who can step up and they can look to target a safety in the 2025 NFL Draft. As good as Wilson has been for the Cowboys throughout his career, he has the seventh-highest cap number on the team at $8.6 million. Dallas can likely replace his production for a more team-friendly deal.
