The Dallas Cowboys offseason is turning out like a Christmas list gone wrong. The offseason began with the departure of Mike McCarthy and dreams of Deion Sanders and Jason Witten taking over. But when Jerry Jones pegged Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, it felt a lot like getting socks in your stocking.

Somehow, things have gotten worse for Cowboys fans over the past week. While Schottenheimer hired Nick Sorensen as his special teams coordinator on Tuesday, he has another polarizing hire in mind that will make Cowboys think those socks have a few giant holes in the bottom.

Cowboys Considering Former Browns Coach Ken Dorsey for Offensive Coordinator

The news comes courtesy of ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who reports that the Cowboys are considering former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey for the same position under Schottenheimer. While an interview has yet to be determined, logistics are being discussed, meaning there is a solid chance Dorsey could wind up in Dallas.

Dorsey began his career as a scout for the Carolina Panthers in 2011 before becoming their quarterbacks coach in 2013. Dorsey left for the same role with the Buffalo Bills in 2019 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022 but he was fired in each of the past two seasons, first with the Bills in 2023 and the Browns in 2024.

The good news is that Dorsey’s offenses in Buffalo weren’t bad. The Bills ranked second in total offense and points scored while ranking seventh in passing and rushing yardage in 2022. Buffalo also ranked fourth in yardage and sixth in points in Dorsey’s second season in 2023 but he was fired midway through the season in favor of Bills quarterbacks coach Joe Brady.

Dorsey was hired by the Browns at the request of Deshaun Watson but that didn’t help the embattled quarterback revive his career. Cleveland’s offense ranked 26th in yardage and 31st in points and Dorsey was fired at the end of the year.

The supporting cast in Dallas would be more like what Dorsey worked with in Buffalo with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb as his main weapons. But Dorsey’s experience with the Browns should be of concern.

Maybe everything will pan out. But it’s fair if Cowboys fans are feeling a lack of confidence. After the news surrounding Schottenheimer’s staff earlier this week, it would have been comforting if a name with a better track record surfaced but for now they can hope Dallas’s interest in Dorsey is nothing more than just an exploratory conversation.
