Cowboys Shoot Down Idea of Former Star Joining New Coaching Staff
By Chris Schad
The Dallas Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach and it was a surprising hire to those that follow the team.
It wasn’t that Schottenheimer was completely off the radar. He served as the offensive coordinator for the final two seasons of Mike McCarthy’s tenure. The hire was surprising considering how many big names were connected with the job including Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.
While Jerry Jones admitted there were several names that reached out, a big hire never came to fruition. Shortly after introducing Schottenheimer on Monday, Jones shot down the possibility of another Cowboys legend joining the staff and dismissed the idea he was in the running for the head coaching job.
Jason Witten Won’t Join Cowboys Coaching Staff in 2025
Former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten was one of the names connected with the Dallas job but Jones told reporters they never reached out to the future Hall of Famer. While there was still an avenue for Witten to join in a different capacity, Jones shot that down as well after praising the future Hall of Famer as a “great coach” and mentor.
Witten spent 16 years of his 17-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, racking up 1,000 receiving yards four times and catching a career-high 110 passes in 2012. He also made the Pro Bowl 11 times and returned to the team after he initially retired in 2018.
But Witten’s track record as a coach was short on experience. Witten served as the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas the past four seasons and recently celebrated back-to-back state championships for private schools but has no experience coaching above the high school level.
You can argue that coaching high school football in Texas is different than anywhere else but it would also be a questionable hire for a staff that has already had a polarizing name connected since Schottenheimer was introduced.
This doesn’t close the door on Witten eventually finding his way into the coaching ranks but just don’t expect it to happen in 2025.
