Usually, a head coach speaking wants to make you run through the wall and tackle the nearest guy in a different uniform. That's not what happened here with New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh, and Dallas Cowboys fans have to be loving the reaction from NFL fans everywhere. As if Cowboys fans need another personality to laugh at.
The speech went viral -- but not for the right reason. Harbaugh introduced himself as trying to sneakily hyping his guys up by yelling "The New York Giants" four times in a row, but none of the players matched his energy.
The speech was met with heavy criticism on social media, and for Cowboys fans, all they can do is laugh.
John Harbaugh's speech is going viral for the wrong reasons
Imagine Brian Schottenheimer repeatedly saying: "This is the Dallas Cowboys!" His doing that four times in a row would be a bit too much, and the NFL media would be clowning him for it. Fortunately, Schotty is a mild-mannered guy who loves football, but he knows that the players know the star is sacred.
There are ways coaches have hit the mark before, but Harbaugh didn't do it here. He was way off.
There may be a full edited clip elsewhere, but the one that was published may have been the worst part of Harbaugh's so-called hype speech. If that's the case, the Giants' PR team has some explaining to do.
Coaches like Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden make you want to play for them, but they are complete opposites. Dungy is more of the coach you feel like you can go to if you're having an off day. Gruden, not so much, but with "Gru," his voice makes you want to push to the end of your physical limits.
Every head coach is going to be pumped up their own way, and if you're a Giants fan, maybe you were expecting more fight in his tone, but it seemed like he was more excited than the players themselves.
So, whose fault is it then? Is Harbaugh actually doing his part by being pumped up? Or are the players not pumped up enough?
Either way, Harbaugh and the players were not on the same page, and it was funny to watch. The Giants are coming in with some higher (at least) expectations to perform better. This is a team with a young quarterback in Jaxson Dart and a future star wideout in Malik Nabers. That's what the Cowboys will see in Week 1.
Then, you add in a Super Bowl coach like Harbaugh to the mix, and you get a veteran coach to lead some motivated youngsters. It's a weird and embarrassing moment, but hopefully for Giants fans, that will translate better on the field than it did in the Giants' building.
