The Dallas Cowboys are set to play their arch-rival, the New York Giants, in Week 1, but with injuries rocking the Giants as of late, the Cowboys are about to see an old familiar face on opening night.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, All-Pro WR Odell Beckham Jr. will be returning to the Giants, his first NFL team. With Malik Nabers fighting his way from an ACL injury and Gunner Olszewski feared to have suffered a torn Achilles, the timeline is uncertain for when the young Nabers will be back on the field, and his status for Week 1 is in doubt, to put it lightly.
The Giants also inked veteran WR Braxton Berrios on Monday morning, a receiver who's been around a few different teams in the league, but it's clear the alarm bells are ringing in New York. How should Cowboys fans feel about the G-Men making these sudden moves?
Cowboys fans can only laugh at the Giants' desperate offseason moves
To be fair to the G-Men, they are thin at WR with Nabers' status up in the air, and Olszewski will likely miss the entire season. But this seems more of a desperate attempt than an actual strategy to build a new offense around Jaxson Dart.
Beckham Jr. has a history of recent injuries, starting in Super Bowl LVI with the Rams when he suffered a torn ACL. That forced him to miss the entire 2022 season. The next year, he managed a left shoulder injury, and the next year, he had a quick stint with the Miami Dolphins, dealing with more injuries.
The 33-year-old isn't going to get any better as time goes on, but apparently the Giants are sure he can be an asset on the field, as the team seemed eager to sign him since he began his workouts.
If Beckham Jr. and Barrios weren't signed, John Harbaugh would be depending on Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney and Isaiah Hodgins as his receivers. The depth chart still looks iffy if you're a Giants fan, but if you're a Cowboys fan, the secondary players, DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant and Caleb Downs, should have Week 1 circled as a day they should feast.
Cowboys fans remember Sunday Night Football back in 2014 when Beckham Jr. made one of the most remarkable catches any of us have ever seen. The catch has been replayed on commercials, highlight reels, etc. Fortunately, that won't happen in Week 1, but you can bet Cowboys fans are going to hear all about it up until kickoff.
The Giants need all they can get, but this is a move out of urgency. It shows the Giants and Harbaugh are all out of sorts well before Week 1.
