Dallas Cowboys fans should be proud of the work Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have done to revamp arguably the worst defense of all time last season. The pickups of Dee Winters and Jalen Thompson, along with the draft, which featured All-American safety Caleb Downs, edge rusher Malachi Lawrence and linebacker Jaishawn Barham, have given fans every reason to jump out of their seats next season.
Five-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman, known as one of the "best corners in the game," as said in his rant about Michael Crabtree 12 years ago, gave Cowboys fans more reason to be pumped about this season's defense. On the 'Richard Sherman Podcast', the First-team All-Pro adds that if the Cowboys can be a remotely balanced team on both sides of the ball, the Cowboys will be a lethal team.
"They can put up points, they can score. Now, if they can stop people and attack and rush the passer at a high level, I think this becomes a much more dangerous Dallas Cowboys team, and you start to see the vision they had when they decided not to pay Micah Parsons and take the draft capital, but can it lead to a Super Bowl?"
Richard Sherman says the Cowboys' defense will help ride them to their end goal
We all know the end goal. Super Bowl. Get out of the divisional playoffs, as America's Team, the most valuable sports team on the planet, is the only NFC team in this century not to make the NFC Championship game.
The last two seasons with two different defensive coordinators have been a disaster, especially last year when the Cowboys gave up 511 points, the most in franchise history. The good news is, there's no way it could get worse than 2025, and even better news, new defensive coordinator Christian Parker is the exact hire Dallas needed to get over the hump.
Matt Eberflus was maybe the worst investment for the Cowboys last season, as the defense couldn't do anything right. To be nice to Eberflus, he came into Dallas thinking he was going to get Micah Parsons in his prime, but of course, that didn't happen.
Other factors led to the defense becoming atrocious. Kenneth Murray ran the wrong way on massively blown assignments. Trevon Diggs missed a ton of time due to a mysterious concussion he suffered at home. But football-wise, he wasn't good in coverage at all. The pass rush couldn't get to the quarterback at all, and gave opposing QBs all the time in the world to throw the ball.
The Cowboys have an all-rounder in Downs who can cover, tackle and blitz. Of course, all 10 guys need to be on the same page, too, but Parker is about as motivated as ever, and the Cowboys' defense can't stop giving him compliments this offseason.
Not to mention, fans will get to see four-time Pro Bowler Quinnen Williams for a full season, as he was maybe the only hope for any bright spot following last year's trade deadline.
Hopefully, Sherman is correct in his take. It won't take much for the Cowboys' defense to become mid-tier. They don't have to be the 2013 Seattle Seahawks or the 1985 Chicago Bears, but if they are at least in the middle of the pack in defense, fans aren't delusional for saying the two magic words for this season. Super Bowl.
