Regardless of the Dallas Cowboys' killer draft class to revamp their defense, they need a bit more ammo to look like a serious defense.
Bobby Wagner has been a veteran name linked to the Dallas Cowboys, but his name has cooled down over the past few months, and it may be time for Dallas to look in a different direction. Wagner, who will be 36 at the start of next season, is making Cowboys fans think that the chances of such a signing are slim at this point.
FanSided's Jake Beckman wrote an article on trade targets for every team after the draft and later in the offseason. Beckman listed New Orleans Saints linebacker Pete Werner as a low-risk signing to bolster the Cowboys' LB room, and while it may not be the home run signing that fans would go crazy about, Cowboys fans still shouldn't hate it.
"The problem for him right now is that the Cowboys’ linebackers are bad and there aren’t really any good linebackers who are available… So they’re going to have to do a little bit of bargain hunting."
Cowboys should sign Saints LB Pete Werner to bolster their LB room
"Pete Werner could be that guy. He’s not great, but he is a starting-caliber linebacker who has played in Brandon Staley’s bastardized version of the Fangio scheme. That’s just about as good as you’re going to get at this point."
Werner isn't the glossy LB that everybody is talking about, but the scheme makes sense. He has great eyes for running backs and wide receivers in pass coverage, and his speed is underrated.
The best way to describe Werner is that he's starting material on a rebuilding team, and at 26 years old, all he may need is a change of scenery with a new young defensive coordinator at the helm. Christian Parker has more experience with secondary guys, but a genius in Parker, who has a stellar history as a passing-game coordinator, could turn Werner into a stud tackler and pass defender.
Werner has also been on the field a lot in his five NFL seasons, racking up 408 total tackles in 73 games. His best season in tackles was 93 in 2023. He dropped slightly in the tackling department in 2025, but nothing to be overly cautious about.
Wagner has all the traits of a veteran presence who can still be a force at 36, but so far, some teams have been hesitant to sign him, largely because of his declining speed and production. He's played in Super Bowls, and the Cowboys could use someone with prominent playoff experience, but no one has pulled the trigger on him just yet.
DeMarvion Overshown still has something to prove after missing most of 2025, and if he delivers on his promise to be one of the best LBs in the league, then sign us up. Even with that, the Cowboys still need some weapons at the position, and it's not a bad idea to test the market for someone like Werner.
Jerry Jones has already made a point of bringing younger assets to the coaching staff, and it's not out of the question to look for a new, fresh face for someone like Werner.
