The Dallas Cowboys are playing like a team in need of changes all across the defense, from the coaches to the players. One man who's not going anywhere is first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, whose hiring didn't inspire much confidence but whose tenure has been worse than expected.
In fact, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones revealed his desire to see Eberflus stay with the team beyond the 2025 season.
“(We hope) the situation is going to continue to evolve, which I know it will. Coach Eberflus has been a high-end coach. … I know right now he’s not satisfied with where we are. We all have to be better as a team, all our players, all our coaches, all our executives, ownership, everybody needs to look in the mirror and see where they can be better," Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.
Eberflus's performance is made worse by the fact that Dallas's offense has been imposing in comparison. Brian Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams are cooking up a top-ranked attack, while the defense has given up 30 or more points in five of eight games. It's been too much to overcome for the Cowboys' offense.
But it seems to be just fine for the powers that be.
Jerry Jones Continues to Prove He's Out of Touch
Water is wet, grass is green, and the Jones family doesn't care about the product they put on the field, far too often being content with a mediocre team. Hiring Schottenheimer and Eberflus were safe moves, but the kind of football the Cowboys have been playing, at least on one side of the ball, should mean the staff is anything but safe.
No matter how the 2025 campaign ultimately played out, this was always going to be a result this season after Jerry Jones ran Micah Parsons out of town with his demeanor during negotiations on an extension. That was another decision Jones took upon himself, putting his own ego before the franchise.
It's his money. He can pay whoever he wants to, and snub whoever he doesn't want to pay. There are just better ways to do due diligence. There are ways to prioritize the fans. Jones can't figure out a way to do that.
Being so blind to Eberflus' flaws is just another example in an endless stream of this, and fans should be tired of the talk from the front office suggesting one thing but their actual decisions setting up something else entirely.
