Cowboys Honor Player Who's Likely Leaving With Gesture Before MNF Showdown
By Cem Yolbulan
Cowboys fans know all about the impact their star offensive lineman Zack Martin makes on the field. Consistently one of the best in his position, Martin is a seven-time first-team All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl selection.
What is perhaps less known about the standout guard, however, is his impact off the field. On Thursday, the NFL announced their candidates for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. It was revealed that the Dallas Cowboys had nominated Martin for the award for his commitment to philanthropy and community.
Cowboys Nominate Zack Martin for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award
According to Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com, Martin has long been involved with the National Medal of Honor museum, raising awareness and honoring recipients each year. In fact, he has gotten his fellow offensive linemen involved, dedicating their cleats to the cause each season.
Furthermore, Martin has a relationship with The Salvation Army, participating in Early Thanksgiving Day meals, providing Christmas gifts, and visiting local children's hospitals.
As a result of his nomination, Martin will receive up to $55,000 in donations for a charity of his choosing. If he wins the Man of the Year award, the donation will go up to $250,000.
The Cowboys nominating a long-tenured veteran is a nice gesture. At age 34, Martin is nearing the end of his career. He is currently dealing with ankle and shoulder injuries and missed the last two games. His contract expires at the end of the season and there is uncertainty surrounding his future, not only as a Cowboy but also as an active NFL player. It's hard to think of a better way to honor a franchise great.
