The Dallas Cowboys didn't need Trevon Diggs to have their best defensive game of the season in Week 7. They shut down the Washington Commanders' undermanned receivers corps with DaRon Bland and Kaiir Elam handling the bulk of the load.
Diggs, who has struggled mightily this season and has openly complained about defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, missed Sunday's game after suffering a concussion in an undisclosed domestic accident on Thursday.
Some thought the timing and nature of the injury were fluky, and the lack of details raised more suspicion. Then again, Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones might not lose any sleep because of it, as relayed by team insider Tommy Yarrish.
Cowboys' Response on Trevon Diggs Is Telling After Week 7 Win
"Yes, I am. There's no reason to dwell on it anymore here. It's what it is. Consequently, what we did see is we played pretty well out there. I don't know the status of Diggs as we move forward, but I feel better about being able to play if we don't have him out there," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan when asked if he was satisfied with Diggs' explanation for his concussion.
Jones initially claimed that he hadn't seen Diggs or spoken to him since the incident. Then, these comments came less than 24 hours after Cowboys team reporter Nicole Hutchinson revealed that the veteran cornerback actually showed up at the team's facility despite still being in the concussion protocol. However, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that they sent him back home.
In the meantime, the Cowboys just opened rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr's 21-day practice window. And while his return to the field isn't imminent, Revel is inching closer to making his highly anticipated NFL debut. That could spell trouble for Elam, but now, it looks like Diggs might not be off the hook.
Long gone are the days when he was a playmaking star in the secondary. He's no longer a ball-hawk and a perennial threat to pick off passes. Diggs continues to be a liability in coverage, often getting burned for big gains, and has had some attitude issues in the past.
With his steep salary and subpar play, it wouldn't be much of a surprise to see the team move on from him this offseason, and, judging by Jerry Jones' words, they feel just fine without him.
