The Dallas Cowboys' offense is firing on all cylinders right now. Their defense, however, has been a different story. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer reportedly spent a lot of time with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus ahead of Week 7, and it resulted in the team's best defensive performance of the season.
Notably, it came without Trevon Diggs on the field, as the veteran suffered a concussion in an undisclosed domestic accident and was ruled out of the game. Now, their once-struggling secondary could get a prime reinforcement for the second half of the season.
According to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. will have his 21-day practice window opened, and he's more than excited to show what he's got at the NFL level.
Shavon Revel Jr. is Getting Closer to His Debut
"Cowboys rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. will also have his 21-day practice window opened on Wednesday," wrote Harris. "Briefly caught up with him in the locker room and he’s about as happy as he’s been since arriving in Dallas. Said he completely trusts the knee and is ready to get out there."
Revel drew first-round grades before his final collegiate season. He suffered a season-ending ACL injury early in the year, causing him to slip to the third round. The Cowboys, however, didn't hesitate to take him, even knowing it would take a while for him to be at full strength. Now, after some setbacks in his recovery, it seems like his knee is finally healthy.
He made his name as one of the most physical defensive backs in college football, especially during his breakout sophomore year. He finished the season with 54 total tackles in 12 games (29 solo), adding 13 passes defended, three tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one defensive touchdown.
Revel looked poised to build from that momentum in his final season, as he had eight tackles (four solo), two passes defended, two interceptions, and one pick-six in just three games before that injury cost him the rest of the year.
The Cowboys are giving up the most passing yards per game (260.3), and acquiring another cornerback before the trade deadline may have been a priority. But if Revel is healthy enough to go out there, they need to sit tight and just let him take the field for the most crucial stretch of the season.
