April is officially here, marking the start of the NFL offseason's second month. The Dallas Cowboys were one of the league's more active teams in March, signing several veteran free agents as America's Team attempts to return to the playoffs following a disappointing seven-win performance in 2024.
The 2025 season doesn't begin until September, though, giving the Cowboys another five months to continue upgrading their roster. The wide receiver room could use some love, considering how Parris Campbell is the only wideout that the team has added thus far.
Fortunately, the perfect WR2 target for quarterback Dak Prescott is still available if the Cowboys act quickly.
Cowboys Must Sign Free Agent WR Tyler Lockett to Start April
Free agent playmaker Tyler Lockett would be the perfect addition if the Cowboys want to make Prescott's life easier.
Lockett, 32, is a 10-year NFL veteran who's torched his fair share of opposing defenses. The former Kansas State WR has turned 661 receptions into 8,594 receiving yards and 61 touchdowns in 161 games after being drafted 69th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in 2015, having spent his entire career so far with the franchise.
That's without mentioning how the 5-foot-10 speedster also owns a 29-510-2 stat line in seven playoff outings. He also has one Pro Bowl nod and three All-Pro appearances (one first-team) due to his early career success as a returner.
Even though he's nearly three years removed from his last 1,000-yard performance, Lockett is capable of being a WR2 for the Cowboys. He just recorded 600 yards and a pair of TDs on 49 catches in 14 games with the Seahawks last season, while the 35.3 receiving yards per game would've ranked third in Dallas behind CeeDee Lamb (79.6) and Jalen Tolbert (35.9).

A signing also makes sense given Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer's connection to Lockett. The first-year HC handled the Seahawks' offensive coordinator duties from 2018 to 2020, which happened to be one of the best three-year runs of the veteran playmaker's career (239-3,076-28 in 48 games).
Knowing that he can trust Lockett due to their history, a reunion could make Schottenheimer's life much easier.
Spotrac lists Lockett's projected market value at $7.7 million annually, which the Cowboys can afford with their $35.7 million in available space. That's a fair price for a proven downfield threat who'll be motivated to show that he still has plenty of juice left in the tank.
Considering how quickly the WR market is drying up, the Cowboys must make a move to sign Lockett before it's too late.
