Cowboys Next Coach After Mike McCarthy Seemingly Down to 2 Candidates
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of a lost season. That means that the fanbase and the media have already started to focus on the next season.
The biggest storyline for the 2025 Cowboys season will almost certainly be about who the next head coach will be. It is almost a certainty that Jerry Jones will not retain Mike McCarthy beyond this season.
As a result, speculations are in full swing. So far, these rumors have been focused on two leading candidates: Deion Sanders and Bill Belichick. In fact, The Athletic's Jeff Howe identified both of these names and no one else as the potential Cowboys head coach for next season.
"Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may salivate over the opportunity to hire his former player and welcome the marketing opportunities that come with Sanders. Really, any team in a prominent market looking for good PR would do well to target Sanders."
The Deion Sanders rumors are understandable. He has been the hottest name in college football, he is a Cowboys legend, and he has unlimited upside as a first-time NFL head coach. So far, however, he has expressed no desire to leave his position at Colorado.
Bill Belichick has been a rumored candidate for Dallas ever since he left New England in the offseason. As a head coach who wants to win immediately, the Cowboys are an obvious fit. The biggest question there is whether two big personalities like Jerry Jones and Belichick could coexist.
"Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said numerous times that he’ll never hire a general manager, and there’s no way he’d diminish Will McClay’s role. Belichick might be OK with that structure in Dallas because it’s been in place for so long."
There will almost certainly be other names emerging. It behooves the Cowboys to cast a wide net in their search. Yet, regardless of how wide that net is, it will likely include Sanders and Belichick.
